The scientific name for birds is Aves. All birds have feathers. They all have backbones, and they are warm-blooded. Birds can regulate their body temperature, unlike amphibians. Female birds lay eggs that contain their offspring, which develop inside of them. All birds have wings, but not all of them can fly. Penguins and Ostriches can't fly, and instead run or swim. Scientists have identified approximately 10,000 species worldwide. According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), 12 percent of birds worldwide are known to be threatened or extinct.
